FAQ
Why are we voting on Measure H now?
-
For almost 40 years the Piedmont community has supported our schools through this local parcel tax.
The existing core parcel tax is expiring and must be renewed by voters to continue supporting essential
academic programs in our schools. This critical measure will extend the existing tax until Piedmont voters determine there is no longer a need for this support.
What does this renewal pay for?
-
Measure H provides funding for:
-
Advanced reading, writing, and language programs
-
Advanced programs in science, technology, engineering and math Ensuring textbooks and instructional materials are up to date
-
Advanced, high quality academic programs and counseling students need to get into college
-
Programs in music, visual and performing arts
-
Competitive salaries to recruit and keep qualified teachers here in Piedmont.
What will Measure H do?
-
Measure H funds will be used to help Piedmont attract and retain exceptional teachers and educational staff. Money raised by Measure H will also go toward:
- Advanced reading, writing, and language programs
- Advanced programs in science, technology, engineering and math
- Ensuring textbooks and instructional materials are up-to-date
- Advanced academic programs and essential college counseling
- Programs in music, visual and performing arts
What percent of the school district budget is paid for by school parcel taxes?
-
Piedmont Unified voter approved parcel taxes provide over 25% of our school district’s budget. This locally controlled funding is essential for attracting and retaining high-quality educators, maintaining manageable class sizes, and offering advanced programs.
Is Measure H a tax increase?
-
No. It merely extends the existing voter approved school parcel tax with minor annual adjustments for cost of living.
What about State and Federal funding?
-
California provides far less money per student for public education than most other states, and Piedmont schools get less per student than other California districts. For example, Oakland Unified receives approximately $23,000 per student, while Piedmont Unified receives less than $13,000 per student.
What will happen If Measure H is not renewed?
-
The Piedmont Board of Education will have to cut about $12M from the annual budget, which will force
major teacher and staff layoffs and significant cuts to academic programs in all Piedmont schools
What will happen If Measure H is not renewed?
-
"Piedmont schools are among the best in California; however, inadequate state funding coupled with the high cost of living in the Bay Area make recruiting and retaining quality teachers and educational staff increasingly difficult, alongside the challenges of offering high quality programs."
We do not have school aged children. Why should we support Measure H?

The quality of our schools protects our property values and attracts young families to our community. Supporting Measure H is a wise investment now and for the future.
